Donuts 101

The perfect pairing to your morning cup of coffee. It is always a good day when someone brings these to the office. The breakfast of champions, can you tell what we are talking about? Donuts of course! There is nothing better than a warm, fresh donut, and it is surprisingly easy to make these treats yourself!

STEP 1:

To make your dough you will need to mix sugar, a liquid base (milk or water) and yeast. Warm up the liquid so it is not yet boiling, but still nice and warm, and add in your sugar and still until it dissolves. Next add in the yeast and stir, then let it rest for 5 minutes.

STEP 2:

After 5 minutes you will notice a bubbly layer on top of your liquid mixture, this is good! You will then add your butter, flour, eggs, and other ingredients, then start to kneed the dough. The dough should be elastic and stretchy.

STEP 3:

Before you are ready to start cooking, you have to let your dough rise. You can do this by placing the dough in a bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerating overnight. This way, your dough will be ready in the morning for fresh donuts for breakfast!

STEP 4:

Spread a little flour on the counter and roll out the dough to be roughly ½ inch thick. For perfectly formed donuts, cut them using a donut cutter. This will allow for perfect roundness and shape. You can also throw the holes in the oil for yummy donut holes!

STEP 5:

After cutting your donuts, place them on a baking sheet to allow them to rise. Once your baking sheet is loaded, cover it with a light clothe and let them rise for an hour. After an hour’s time they should be puffy and ready to go.

STEP 6:

Heat up your oil. Donuts don’t fry for long, so be sure to use a thermometer to ensure the oil is the perfect temperature (365-375 degrees Fahrenheit). Keep on measuring the temperature as you cook, since it may get to hot or cold as you go. Once the oil ready toss in your donuts and cook until they reach a golden-brown color. This typically takes about a minute and half for each side. Don’t forget to flip your donuts so they don’t get burnt!

STEP 6:

Scoop out the cooked donuts and lay them on a baking sheet covered with a paper towel. The paper towel will soak up the extra oil and prevent a mess. Let the donuts cool slightly, then they are ready for toppings.

STEP 7:

Glaze, frost, or sprinkle the donuts, it’s your choice! For an extra treat, add a scoop of ice cream and top with whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and a cherry for a donut sundae. However you chose to top your finished treat, enjoy, you earned it!
